Questions?
We’re so excited to celebrate this special occasion with you! If you’re not familiar with Bat Mitzvah traditions, don’t worry—we’ve got you covered. Below are some frequently asked questions to help you feel comfortable and prepared.
What is a Bat Mitzvah?
A Bat Mitzvah (which means “daughter of the commandment” in Hebrew) is a Jewish coming-of-age ceremony for a girl, typically around the age of 12 or 13. It marks her transition into Jewish adulthood, where she takes on new responsibilities within the Jewish community. During the service, she will read from the Torah (the Jewish holy scroll), lead prayers, and share a personal reflection on her studies and what this milestone means to her.
What should I wear?
Dress as you would for a nice religious service or a semi-formal event. A cocktail dress is a great option for women, while men customarily wear suits. Kids typically go with dresses or a collared shirt and dress pants. Cool sneakers are appreciated by all. Shoulders should be covered while in the sanctuary (a shawl, cardigan, or blazer works perfectly). Some men choose to wear a kippah (a small head covering), but it is optional in a Reform synagogue.
What happens during the service?
The Bat Mitzvah will lead parts of the service, read from the Torah in Hebrew, and give a short speech. The Rabbi and Cantor will also guide the congregation through prayers and songs. If you’re unfamiliar with the service, just follow along in the prayer book. Some prayers are in Hebrew, but translations are provided. You are welcome to participate as much or as little as you feel comfortable.
Will there be a party afterward?
Yes! We will head over to Capital One Hall in Tysons Corner, directly after the service. There will be a bus for Hailey’s friends that are not accompanied by family members to transport them from Rodef Shalom to Capital One Hall.
What times do you recommend for pick up and drop off?
The service will begin promptly at 5:00PM at Rodef Shalom - 4:45 drop off
The party ends at 11:00 PM at Capital One Hall, kids can be picked up at the main entrance.
What about parking?
There is ample parking at the synagogue.

My Mitzvah
Project
Did you know that there are 33 billion pounds of trash poured into the ocean every year?
I want to help lower that number and protect our beaches. For my Bat Mitzvah Project, I am participating in Beach Clean Ups and I am raising money for the Surfrider Foundation (https://www.surfrider.org/).
The Surfrider Foundation is a group that fights for plastic reduction, ocean protection, beach access, coasts & climate, and clean water. I’ve participated in beach clean ups where we have removed hazardous rocks, construction debris, and trash across Delaware beaches.
This is important to me because I like to surf and swim at the Indian River North Inlet but there have been hazardous rocks in the sand because of years of erosion due to climate change.
